Breath-holding and the sensations due to chemical and mechanical stimuli to breathing.

چکیده
EVERY medical student and, indeed, every schoolboy knows that it is possible to hold the breath for a longer time with lungs fully inflated than at a smaller lung volume, and that the breath-holding time can also be prolonged by hyperventilation beforehand. This prolongation is possible because the onset of the unpleasant sensations which arise during breath-holding is delayed. Thus both mechanical and chemical factors are able to modify the development of the intolerable sensations which causes the subject to break off the breath-hold. The object of the present paper is to review the experiments which have been performed to study this subject and to show how they can help in understanding the origins of respiratory sensation.

متن کاملThe Interrelationship between Pulmonary Mechanics and the Spontaneous Breathing Pattern in the Tokay Lizard, Gekko Gecko
The normal breathing pattern of the Tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) consists of single breaths or bursts of a few breaths separated by periods of breath holding. Increases in pulmonary ventilation that accompany rises in body temperature are caused by increases in respiratory frequency due to shortening of the periods of breath holding. Tidal volume and breath duration remain relatively constant. Mea...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Electrocardiography Parameters Changes in Breath‐Holding Children Compared to Controls
Background Breath-holding spells (BHS) are brief periods when young children stop breathing for up to 1 minute and are widely recognized types of non-epileptic severe occasions in early stages of childhood. This study aimed to evaluate QTd and QTc changes in children with breath-holding spells compared with healthy children. <stron...
متن کاملThe Role of Rapid Shallow Breathing Index in Predicting Successful Weaning of Pediatric Patients with Respiratory Failure
Background About 40 to 60% of all patients admitted to pediatric intensive care unitsundergo mechanical ventilation and 10 to 20% will fail to be extubated. We aimed to determine the role of the rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI) in predicting successful weaning of pediatric patients with respiratory failure. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study, was performed on 72 mechanical...
متن کاملRecurrent breath holding spells with infantile colic.
Breath holding spells are stereotypical episodes of brief, involuntary cessations of breathing with cyanosis and hypoxia that may occur in children in response to stimuli such as anger, frustration, fear, or injury. Typically, they occur between 9 months to 3 years with a peak incidence at about 2 years(1). As the child matures and his understanding develops, these episodes decrease in frequenc...
